Wage Protection System (WPS) 2.0

Empowering Transparent, Timely, and Secure Salary Payments in Bahrain

As part of Bahrain’s commitment to labor market modernization and employee rights protection, the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA), in collaboration with the Central Bank of Bahrain and BENEFIT, has launched the enhanced Wage Protection System (WPS 2.0). This upgraded system ensures that all private sector employees receive their wages on time, through secure and traceable banking channels.

What’s New in WPS 2.0?

Effective January 2026, WPS 2.0 introduces a series of mandatory enhancements for all private sector employers in Bahrain:

All private sector employers must comply with WPS 2.0 starting January 2026.

Employers are required to upload a standardized salary file each month via the LMRA’s Expatriate Management System (EMS).

Even if no changes occur, a monthly file is still required.

Justifications must be submitted for any unpaid or partially paid salaries.

Each employer must appoint a single WRP to manage WPS operations.

The WRP must have an advanced eKey and may assign up to 5 authorized users (makers/checkers).

All salaries must be processed exclusively through the LMRA WPS portal.

Direct salary transfers outside the WPS system are no longer permitted.

Salary payments are executed through banks and payment service providers (PSPs) approved by the Central Bank of Bahrain and integrated with the WPS platform.

IBAN validation and real-time salary tracking are enforced to ensure accuracy and compliance.

Only Fawri Salary Transfers are supported for WPS transactions, ensuring same-day credit and compliance with LMRA requirements.

WPS 2.0 enables real-time monitoring of wage payments and employer compliance.

Employers’ WPS compliance rates are tracked and reported to LMRA.

All private sector employers and employees (Bahraini and expatriate) are required to participate.

Government entities, diplomatic missions, and domestic workers are currently exempt from WPS 2.0.
